Celulose Acetate, also known as "Zyl," is a short name for the cellulose acetate material, which is composed of wood flakes, cottonseed fibers, stabilizers, and plasticizers. Zyl is the most commonly used plastic frame material due to its wide range of colors, textures, styles, and patterns. Temples and frame fronts can be cut from zyl blocks extruded as a block acetate sheet. Alternatively, granular zyl can be liquefied and injection molded. Block-cut zyl is more stable and stronger, whereas injection molded zyl is less stable and less expensive. Zyl can shift and lose its form when used on a daily basis in warm temperatures. Metal cores in the temples are used by some manufacturers to strengthen and stabilize the frame.
